Quote Conversation #3

From the bottom of page 143 to 153, Santiago talks with the wind, the desert and the sun about what he must do to turn himself in the wind, which he has to do if he wants to survive.

Choose a quote from these pages and post it on your blog; include the page number and use the Post title:  Quote Conversation #3.  Then use a sentence starter to share your perspective on the quote.

After you post, visit two other classmates' blogs and comment on their posts.

Sentence Starters:

I really understand (or don’t understand) this because . . .
I think the author is trying to say that . . .
If I were (name of characters at this point) I would . . .
This part doesn’t make sense because. . .
I wonder what would happen if...
I found this interesting because...
My thoughts on this statement  are...
If I was going to state my opinion I would say..

Example Post:

"Love is the force that transforms and improves the Soul of the World" (p. 150).

My thoughts on this statement are that Santiago now understands love in a totally different way than back when he thought he was in love with the merchant's daughter.  That was basically just a crush that had no meaning.  Now after his experiences in the world and the desert, he knows that love is a very powerful force that affects the world.

Part II Reading Review C

Go back to page 123 and re-read through page 127.  Then, use the events on those pages to help you answer the following.  Comment on this post with your answers.  Please be sure to number your answers to match the questions.

The alchemist tells Santiago "you don't have to understand the desert:  all you have to do is contemplate a single grain of sand, and you will see in it all the marvels of creation."

1)  With this in mind, why do you think the alchemist chose to befriend Santiago, though he knew that the Englishman was the one looking for him?

2)  What is the meaning of the two dead hawks and the falcon in the oasis?

3)  At one point, the alchemist explains to Santiago the secret of successfully turning metal into gold.  How does this process compare to finding a Personal Legend?

Hero's Journey Connection

After you have read to page 87, review the stages of the hero's journey both in your folded notes sheet, and your Character X slips.  Choose one or two stages that you think Santiago has experienced so far.  Create a post on your own blog with the following:

1)  The Stage in the Hero's Journey
2)  The event or events in Santiago's experience that you think match(es) this stage
3)  One fact about this stage that shows how Santiago's experience is similar

When you finish your post, comment on one other classmate's post as to whether you agree or not and why.

Comment on this post with your answers to these questions:

1)  What two things are present in both The Alchemist and Harry Potter and the Sourcer's Stone?

2)  Describe the items' role in Harry Potter and the Sourcer's Stone (why are they important?):

3)  Who is interested in these items in The Alchemist?  Why is this person part of the desert caravan?

Quote Conversation #2

Read pg. 61 - 79.  As you read, write down three important or memorable quotes.  When you finish the reading, choose one quote to post on your blog.  Use a sentence starter from the post "Enroute to Your Personal Legend" to respond to your quote.  Post your quote, page number, response and then a question about the quote or the reading.  Your post title should be:  Quote Conversation #2.

Example:

"In the desert, disobedience means death" (p.71)

I think this quote means that what is coming up is going to be challenging and dangerous.  People need to pay attention to signs and take things seriously.

Why is the desert such a dangerous place?

After you post, reply to two of your classmates' posts.
