Quote Conversation #3

From the bottom of page 143 to 153, Santiago talks with the wind, the desert and the sun about what he must do to turn himself in the wind, which he has to do if he wants to survive.

Sentence Starters:

I really understand (or don’t understand) this because . . .
I think the author is trying to say that . . .
If I were (name of characters at this point) I would . . .
This part doesn’t make sense because. . .
I wonder what would happen if...
I found this interesting because...
My thoughts on this statement  are...
If I was going to state my opinion I would say..

Example Post:

"Love is the force that transforms and improves the Soul of the World" (p. 150).

My thoughts on this statement are that Santiago now understands love in a totally different way than back when he thought he was in love with the merchant's daughter.  That was basically just a crush that had no meaning.  Now after his experiences in the world and the desert, he knows that love is a very powerful force that affects the world.

Go back to page 123 and re-read through page 127.  Then, use the events on those pages to help you answer the following.  Comment on this post with your answers.  Please be sure to number your answers to match the questions.

The alchemist tells Santiago "you don't have to understand the desert:  all you have to do is contemplate a single grain of sand, and you will see in it all the marvels of creation."

1)  With this in mind, why do you think the alchemist chose to befriend Santiago, though he knew that the Englishman was the one looking for him?

2)  What is the meaning of the two dead hawks and the falcon in the oasis?

3)  At one point, the alchemist explains to Santiago the secret of successfully turning metal into gold.  How does this process compare to finding a Personal Legend?
